Sakurai Says He Will Continue Making Smash Bros Games
Masahiro Sakurai may not necessarily continue with creating games and is open to different possibilities
Development for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's DLC was recently wrapped up following the reveal and release of Kingdom Hearts' Sora. With 86 playable characters, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's character select screen will be remembered as one of greatest in gaming history.
Last week, Masahiro Sakurai answered a few of IGN's questions during an email interview. It seems that there's not only uncertainty regarding the Super Smash Bros. series, but there is also some uncertainty regarding Sakurai's role in the game development industry.
During the IGN interview, Sakurai was asked if he'd like to work on something other than Super Smash Bros. "before potentially returning to the series." Perhaps we could see something like a sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising, a 3DS game developed between Brawl and Smash 4.
"When you say 'returning to the series,' it makes it sound like there is going to be another Super Smash Bros. title, but currently, there are no such plans," responded Sakurai. "It would be best not to assume that there will always be another one."
Masahiro Sakurai has previously mentioned how there's never a guarantee that there will be a sequel in the Super Smash Bros. series. Following up Ultimate will be particularly difficult as the "Everyone Is Here" theme is something that will probably never occur again.
"Apart from that, I may not necessarily continue with creating more games, as I could potentially go down a different path," continued Sakurai. "As for involvement with the gaming industry, there are various ways to do that. I like to keep an open mind about what I should do and take a look at all the different possibilities."

Back in May of this year, Sakurai wrote in a Famitsu Column issue that he was considering the appeal of an early retirement. At this time, Sakurai is 51 years old and has been working in the game industry for about 31 years.
"Everything must come to an end," wrote Sakurai back in May 2021. "It's better to stay busy and do my best, as long as I can put up with it."
During a discussion with Katsuhiro Harada of Bandai Namco, Sakurai echoed the idea that he should work for as long as he can.
"In this way, I don't think I can choose when I'll retire myself," said Sakurai. "However, I also think I should work as long as I can."
With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now officially finished, Sakurai believes that he'll only be able to work on a few more games. Considering what Sakurai said during the IGN interview, he may seek to wind down into a different role within the gaming industry.
At one point, Sakurai mentioned that there was once an attempt to leave the role of being the director of a working Super Smash Bros. title to someone else, "but it didn't work out."
"To be honest, I'd rather leave it to someone else because it's very hard for me. I've actually tried, but it didn't work out," said Sakurai in a previous Famitsu Column. ""I may be able to find someone who can make improvements here and there, but I don't have a clue who would be able to create content from nothing [in the same quality]."
As of right now, Sakurai is not sure the series will be able to continue without him. It is interesting to note that while Sakurai is considering other possibilities for his career before retirement, he did mentioned that he'd be willing to have a discussion with Nintendo if he were to be asked to work on another sequel in the series.
Time will ultimately tell what Sakurai does next. In the meantime, there currently aren't any plans as Sakurai is likely enjoying his earned vacation.
